CSM Scotland is a joint venture between the Medicines Control Agency
(MHRA) and the Scottish Executive aimed to improve drug safety in
Scotland. It is sited within the Centre for Adverse Drugs Reactions
Scotland (CARDS), in Edinburgh. This website will tell you something
about the personnel working in the
centre and provide information on the centre's main aim, which is
to increase and improve the quality of adverse drug reactions (ADR)
reporting in Scotland using the Yellow Card
Reporting Scheme. It is our intention that this scheme in Scotland
will assist in improving the quality of healthcare provision by facilitating
ADR reporting.
Local reporting schemes in England and Wales have operated for over
20 years and have been shown to increase the quality and quantity
of ADR reporting. This is an important part of clinical governance.
In addition, because of our local network, we hope to provide local
contact points to assist reporters when they are uncertain about the
correct steps to take in this process.
The centre is based within the Medicines Information Department of
the Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust. It is already establishing
a network, through medicines information services in Scotland. In
addition an advisory group of relevant experts has been established.
This advisory group will include representatives of health professional
groups able to make ADR reports, including doctors (working in hospital
and primary care), pharmacists (working in hospital and the community),
nurses, midwives and health visitors.
